ONCE UPON A TIME…

An imaginative exhibition in the Fashion Institute of Technology until April 16, 2016, examines fairy tales through the lens of high fashion.

In fairy tales by authors such as Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Andersen, dresses were used to symbolize a character’s transformation, vanity, power, or privilege. Inspired by that symbolism, architect Kim Ackert designed dramatic, fantasy-like settings to place more than 80 impressive objects! And they lived happily ever after…

Magical shoes, gossamer dresses, glass slippers. Clothes and accessories in fairy tales take on a new dimension, build characters, establish roles, and enhance the imagination. Heroes and heroines transform and become good from bad, ugly to beautiful, poor to rich. In fashion, the concept of “fairy tale” reveals collections or sensational shows. The exhibition entitled “Fairy Tale Fashion” illuminates the fashion of children’s books, on the small and large screen and the catwalk, starting from the 18th century and leading us to today with more than 80 objects of mystery, passion, and drama, both before and after the happy end. Little Red Riding Hood’s red cape, Cinderella’s white apron, Snow-White’s red apple, and designers such as Dolce&Gabbana, Tom Ford, Mary Katrantzou, Alexander McQueen, and Rick Owens illustrated 15 different fairytales.
