MATHILDE THOMAS: THE PIONEER BEHIND CAUDALIE
The woman who pioneered the use of grape extracts in skin care, talks about beauty, lifestyle, inspiration, and, of course, all things Caudalie.
What is the philosophy behind Caudalie?
I created Caudalie because I believe in beauty products that are not only effective but also natural and luxurious –this is the essence of the brand, which I am committed to each and every day. With my team of researchers and formulators, we search for the best products, textures, and scents and magnify the great ingredients taken from the vine. Our collaboration with Professor Vercauteren, a world specialist in polyphenols and Professor of Pharmacognosis at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier, has enabled us to file major patents: grape polyphenols, the most powerful anti-oxidants in the plant world, Resveratrol from grapevine and grapevine Viniferine. We have also discovered many other exclusive and active substances from it, including organic grape water, grape oil, and Vinolevure.
How do the customers respond to the idea of “natural-born” cosmetics?
Very well! People are more and more aware of the incredible powers of natural ingredients. All our patented molecules have been tested and their efficacy is proven –not to mention Resveratrol which has been proven to be the most powerful anti-ageing, natural molecule by the Faculty of Sciences of Harvard. Today consumers need products that are proven to be efficient and at the same time natural.
“The Caudalie customer is a woman who wants products that combine efficacy, naturalness, and glamour”
-How hard was it to combine effectiveness with naturalness?
The important thing is to believe in what you do. Since the beginning, my husband Bertrand and I believed in a greener planet and wiser cosmetics. In 2005 we were the first company to remove all parabens from our formulas –it was a real challenge at the time! We always favor natural and environment-friendly ingredients. We believe in clean formulas: NO parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, mineral oils, sodium laureth sulfate or animal ingredients. Since 2012, we have decided to expand our commitment by giving 1% of the brand turnover to environmental protection and eco-charities, while all packaging is made of recycled paper and plastic. Regarding scents and textures, I have always been convinced that it is possible to combine pleasure and efficacy. We try to create formulas that make the skin look more beautiful and younger for longer.
-Could you explain the concept of Vinotherapie® and its benefits?
Vinotherapie® is based on very serious and valid research that asserts the healing power of grape seeds and vine. Caudalie Vinotherapie® spa is an exclusive spa concept using the healing properties of grapes. Caudalie Vinothérapie® spas use natural hot spring water, rich in minerals and trace elements, combined with extracts of grape and vines. Our spas provide unique treatments based on grapes, with the help of our incredible vinotherapists. According to each skin type or desired result, the vinotherapists offer facials or body treatments and cures, to correct imperfections, prevent aging or calm the body and mind. Our Vinotherapie® spas combine the antioxidant powers of grape polyphenols in Caudalie products with a beautiful setting.
-What are your favorite Caudalie products?
I love all my products! I test hundreds of formulas before launching a product. Right now I am working on a line for the body, so I am trying many different formulas for our new body lotion and body butter.
-What is your beauty routine?
I start with Micellar Cleansing Water. Afterwards, I use Vinosource SOS Thirst Quenching Serum, and –of course– Premier Cru La Crème and Premier Cru Eyes. Finally, a touch of Nars gloss!
-What kind of woman is the Caudalie customer?
She is a woman who wants products that combine efficacy, naturalness, and glamour. We try to have different textures and formulas to answer all skin expectations.
-Where do you draw your inspiration?
The grapevine is an inexhaustible source of natural wealth and it is my primary source of inspiration. Also, from everyday life, the city, listening to my consumers. Since we moved to New York, the city and our American consumers have inspired me a lot to create new products and the new packaging.
-How would you define beauty?
I keep it simple: a beautiful natural skin, a slim and fit silhouette, shiny hair, being in love…
