OSCAR DE LA RENTA
CARNATION

Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) were mentioned in Greek literature 2,000 years ago. At the hands of the British designer Peter Copping, now in the helm of the House, this humble flower receives a luxurious makeover for Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2016 collection. For the most part, carnations express love, fascination and distinction.
– Light red carnations represent admiration, while dark red denote deep love and affection. The late Oscar de la Renta wore a deep red carnation as a boutonniere.
– Carnation is the national flower of Spain. In Spanish bull fighting, red carnations are thrown into the ring after the fighting.
– Pink carnations have the most symbolic and historical significance. According to a Christian legend, carnations first appeared on Earth as Jesus carried the Cross. The Virgin Mary shed tears at Jesus’ plight, and carnations sprang up from where her tears fell. Thus the pink carnation became the symbol of a mother’s undying love.

DOLCE&GABANA
DAISIES

The name “daisy” is considered a corruption of “day’s eye”, because the whole head closes at night and opens in the morning. Chaucer called it “eye of the day”. The Italian designers Dolce&Gabbana enliven their dresses with large macrame daisies in their Spring/Summer collection 2016.
– Daisies represent purity and innocence.
– Daisies are found everywhere on Earth except Antarctica.
– A daisy is actually two flowers in one.
The white petals count as one flower and the cluster of tiny yellow disc petals that form the “eye” is technically another.
