ILIANA PAPAGEORGIOU ON HER CAREER AND LIFE LESSONS

Greek model Iliana Papageorgiou, 32, began her career at the age of 22; in just a decade, she walked for couture shows and went on to land campaigns for fashion & beauty brands. After rising through the ranks of GNTM Greece, she is navigating a new career path as a TV presenter. She gives a glimpse into her world as she talks to Ada Nikolaou, wearing standout looks of this season.

I grew up in Patras in the ’90s. As a child, I watched beauty pageants on TV, but it never crossed my mind that I could be a model. Instead, my mom was my role model. Always chic, she wore nice shoes, red lipstick. Back then, only my mom was great in my eyes.

I studied business administration. My dad was a businessman, so I took it for granted that this was what I would do, also, in the future.

I became a model when somebody spotted me on the street and made an appointment with Elena Christopoulou. I had just graduated from university. We met, talked, and thanks to this very strong-minded lady, I started modelling at 22.

When I started modelling, the trend was to have faded eyebrows, white and very light hair. Of course, for a natural brunette like me, this was the greatest challenge. But still, I worked a lot, from the first moment.

The best thing about modelling is travelling. You meet new people, cultures; you learn new things. The most challenging thing is the insecurity you feel every day about landing the job or not. I was booked for my first job in Germany, for a well-known hair products company, then I moved on to Berlin, Hamburg, Milan. The money was better there, so I stayed.

Star Hellas (Beauty Contest): They proposed, and I said yes! When I told my mother, she was very positive. It is a great honour to be invited to this contest, that’s why I accepted.

Miss Universe: One of the best memories of my life. A model usually does everything herself; casting, travel, whether you will book a job or not. At the pageant, I had friends, and we stayed in a nice hotel. Everything was arranged; we had people helping us everywhere. It was a perfect experience. I lived the life of a queen for a month.

While I was in America, as a model, I had no interaction with social media. I did not allow them even in my contracts either. This changed when I came to Greece and did GNTM. Social media is not modelling; it is somehow an illusion. Nobody lives in total perfection. A strong influencer, girl or boy, has collaborators (a photographer, above all), creates concepts, travels and gets paid well to do all these things. It takes a lot of work to reach this level.

My advice to young people is to listen and work hard. People who have been in the field for years know better. Nothing is given away. You need to work hard, be kind, and respect the people you work with. In my case, at least, these three things were a big help.

The advice to my younger self would be to have enjoyed the route more. It could be done, but I did not allow myself to do it. Living abroad, contracts, everything changed so quickly, and I took it very seriously. It took years to realize how meaningful these experiences had been. Then, I thought that I wanted to be home with my mom and my sister. I was always looking for a piece from the past. I would like to have accepted the change from the beginning, to live this experience to its full extend- every moment of it.

Fashion has little impact on the way I dress. I have always been a big fan of sportswear. In everyday life, this hasn’t changed; I adapt according to the trends. But I love fashion.

By the time I am 40, I hope that, with the power of God, I will have my own family and be able to combine family and work. I want to be happy, smiling and healthy. My beauty routine is very simple.
