HOW AUDACIOUS ARE YOU TODAY?

It is arguably the aim of any beauty company creating an eyeshadow palette to find a colour selection free of any “filler” shades, which is probably why Lancôme’s first task for Lisa Eldridge, signed as its creative director of make-up earlier this year, was to come up with the ultimate everyday edit.

Filled with 16 of the hues that normally end up worn down to the metal in other palettes – the dusky rose, the matt beige, the softly shimmering gunmetal grey – Auda(city) in Paris takes Eldridge’s expertise in making women look their best, and transfers it to the rest of us. Like Urban Decay’s much-loved Naked palettes and MAC’s bestselling monos, this is the answer for those who always finds themselves scraping out the remainder of their perfect fawn brown shadow whilst the peacock blue and buttercup yellow shades remain intact.

The palette is designed to cover your day and night make-up needs equally. Take the two nude matt shades along with the shimmering champagne hue, says Eldridge, and you have a day-to-day go-to loo

“Use the lightest shade across the eyelid as the base and then team with the darker shade in the socket, blending really well. Use the flat brush to line the socket gently with the same shade,” she explains. “Finish the look by dusting the shimmer shade in the centre, to add a little subtle sparkle and a touch underneath too. Finish with a slick of black mascara.”

All colours are designed to be used either dry or wet, and are set out in blocks of four, with darker shades for lining and defining and lighter shades to highlight.

The immediate stand-out hue is the soft dusky rose – a colour often difficult to find, but universally flattering – which Eldridge says is the perfect base for a more dramatic evening look.

“Apply it across the lid and add in the purple shimmer shade for a hazy purple wash. You can also use the same shade underneath all the way along. If you want to really pump it up for an evening look, add another layer of eyeshadow, using the shiny grey all over and the matt grey,” she tells us. “Go all along the socket line, backwards and forwards, like a windscreen wiper, to create more depth. Then add another layer of mascara. Lancôme’s Grandiose mascara is great because you can actually keep going – keep adding a layer and it doesn’t get clumpy.”

Another benefit of having a make-up artist with a wealth of experience creating your products? They are familiar with the complaints women have with what is already on the market – and how to solve the problems. So for perhaps the first time, the brush that comes with this palette is one we won’t be throwing away – with a soft end for shading and diffusing and a firmer end for lining and intensifying.
