what is skinimalism?

Have you ever wondered if you really need all those makeup products and cosmetics on your beauty shelf? Will you use all of them shortly? Is everything ideal for your skin type?

That is precisely what the new trend of skinimalism aims for; first, to make you wonder if the dozens of skincare and makeup products you own are really necessary for you, and then, introduce you to a new world of beauty, where there is no place for exaggeration and one-too-many products.

Skinimalism (from the words skin and minimalism), according to Pinterest’s 2021 Trend Predictions Report, is the minimalist approach to skincare and makeup that allows for your natural glow and beauty to stand out. In other words: it’s time to spring-clean your cosmetics, keeping only what is absolutely necessary and putting aside the ten-step skincare routine that you once found intriguing.

Skinimalism simplifies skincare and makeup, loves versatile products, and introduces you to a sustainable (and clearly more budget-friendly) beauty routine.

the necessity that became a trenD

Skinimalism as a trend became very popular this year, and this is not a mere coincidence. The year of quarantine showed by example what it’s like to walk around foundation-free and leave the house without wearing lipstick. According to the business management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, the sales of makeup products took a significant nosedive in 2020, while lip products, in particular, fell by 15% in the U.S. since the beginning of the pandemic.

In addition, skincare minimalism was applauded by many dermatologists, who took the opportunity to remind us that “many of their patients’ skin problems worsen by the use of multiple products,” as highlighted in the article “Everything you need to know about skinimalism“, published in The Derm Review. Complex treatments, especially when they include products that do not suit the patient’s skin type, can disrupt pH balance, resulting in redness, dryness and acne.

However, at the “heart” of skinimalism lies a more profound message; the end of the era of ideal beauty standards and the love for ourselves. A simple but carefully chosen treatment routine can cover all the skin’s needs. The same goes for makeup. Today, the famous “Less is more” is more than a quote; it’s a trend.

STEP 1

Choose a mild and hydrating face cleanser, such as a cleansing milk or a balm.

We Suggest: Oat Cleansing Balm, The Inkey List.

♥ Cleansing balm with oatmeal (soothing action) and ceramides (elements that strengthen the natural skin barrier).

STEP 2

Go-to serum with one (at least) active ingredient. Pick between serums with vitamin C, retinol (if your skin needs it), hyaluronic acid or serums that provide the skin with antioxidant protection.

We Suggest: Super Bounce, Glossier

♥ The formula combines 3 forms of hyaluronic acid, and pro-vitamin B5 for multilayer hydration.

STEP 3

If you are in the city, and not at the beach, or by a pool, pick a moisturiser or a day cream with an SPF, to avoid the use of extra sunscreen.

We Suggest: UV Plus Anti-Pollution Day Screen Multi Protection SPF50

Clarins UV Plus Anti Pollution Protector

♥ Moisturizer and sunscreen 2 in 1, with a light, non-greasy texture, completely invisible on every skintone.
