The moodhackers

Do cosmetic products – lipsticks, perfumes, creams, e.t.c – have the power to change our mood? Science says yes, and history agrees.

Take red lipstick, for example; experts are constantly creating cosmetic formulas that aim to lift our spirits, besides improving our image, but red lipstick has been a leader in this field for decades.

From the Suffragettes to the Great Depression of 1929 and the post-war period, red lipstick has always been a symbol of positive mood, high morale, and an implicit declaration of power. Thus, red lipstick was -and still is- a weapon in women’s handbags.

The connection between psyche and skin

Happiness releases all the “good” hormones (endorphins, serotonin, oxytocin) that help the body function properly, the blood circulate well, and the oxygen reach every inch of the organism, as it should. The reflection of this proper, punctual function is radiant, healthy-looking skin.
But happiness does not solve all skin problems, just as flawless, glowing skin is not necessarily the secret of happiness.

A balanced lifestyle – healthy eating, water, good sleep, not smoking, not consuming alcohol, exercise and meditation – helps keep you healthy, just as the right cosmetic care keeps your skin happy.

To achieve the final result -the deep feeling of balance and happiness- you need both.

Cosmetics can be mood hackers

Researchers claim that a beauty routine and certain products can improve a person’s mood and overall psychological well-being, even for a short while. As a result, cosmetic formulas based on holistic, emotional and spiritual values are rapidly growing while cosmetology is entering new paths, with neuroscience taking up an important, new role in the perpetual battle with time. Neuroscientists now see the beauty and psychological balance as one; the in-depth study of neuroscience is shaped through rich, sensual textures, aromatic extracts that positively affect psychology, and unique packaging that pleases the senses.

Flawless make-up or some drops of perfume are “weapons” that help many women face the day with confidence. Flower scents, according to experts, have a stimulating effect on the brain, facilitating the release of positive thoughts. Likewise, aromatherapy sleep products reduce depression, while studies show that massage techniques (even if it’s only during application) help reduce stress significantly while positively affect the mood. In any case, the best cosmetic product is the one you enjoy from the time you buy it until the moment you use it to its last drop.

RELAXING SLEEP SPRAY

A good night’s sleep affects the mood; it’s a unique energy booster and helps cope with the demands of everyday life. On the contrary, when the body experiences sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality, the balance is disturbed, and even health problems can arise. The definition of “good sleep” is the sleep that is long enough (6-8 hours) and has specific qualitative attributes: it must come easily and continuously, with no waking up constantly during the night, and it has a REM phase which lasts at least 1.5 with 2 hours.

FLORAL FRAGRANCES

Studies have shown that the smell of flowers, such as jasmine, can significantly boost mood, thanks to the natural stimulating effect they have on the brain: they increase cognitive-emotional responses, which in turn increase positive thoughts.

RED LIPSTICKS

You don’t need to be a make-up expert to understand why women’s confidence rises when they wear lipstick.
According to a study conducted by Procter & Gamble and Harvard University and published in NY Times, women who wear lipstick are more inclined to take selfies and hence – theoretically – feel more confident than women who don’t. The study also found that women wore red lipstick when they wanted to influence or make a statement with their presence in meetings.
So if you haven’t tried red lipstick yet, do dare. Try out different shades, from deep red to warm red-orange, to find the one that suits you best. If it is your first time with red, and you’d like a subtle result to start with, change the application technique by tapping some colour with your fingertips.

tips

– Next time you apply a moisturizer or a serum, do so by using gentle massage movements -search online for an application protocol.

– Experience the benefits of aromatherapy using a towel. After cleansing the skin, dissolve a few drops of your favourite essential oil in a bowl of warm water and soak in a small towel. Wring it dry, close your eyes, put it gently on your face and take a few deep breaths.
