blighlighter: the new makeup trend
you can’t ignore

“Skinimalism” is the new glow up and one of the biggest skincare and makeup trends of 2021*.
Today, more and more women embrace new, simple, “effortlessly chic” minimalistic routines that let the natural skin texture shine through. As for makeup, the beauty industry’s new reality marks the end of the caked-on makeup look. For the sake of “skinimalism” and the “less is more” rule, versatile products like the blush-highlighter or blighlighter showed up and became a game-changer.
The CODE magazine has all the details about this hybrid makeup product that combines light washes of colour and shine to offer a subtle glow and the “skin that looks like skin” effect.

WHAT IS BLIGHLIGHTER

The term “blighlighter” derives from the words blush and highlighter. It was first introduced by celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg when she decided to launch a blush and highlighter in one product under her brand name, Jamie Makeup. But in fact, these hybrid products (blush-highlighters) had already been in the market for some time to simplify our daily makeup routine. They could be used as a blush, an eyeshadow and a highlighter too!

HOW TO APPLY A BLIGHLIGHTER

Are you curious as to where a blighlighter goes? According to Jamie Greenberg, “they are designed for the cheeks and the higher parts of the face.” But you can also use a blighlighter:

  • On your cheeks, hairline and the temples of your face.
  • On your eyelids, as an eyeshadow, for a monochromatic makeup look.
  • On your lips.
  • Over the nose, as if the sun hit you there, for a sunkissed look.

Moreover, according to fellow makeup artist and entrepreneur Gucci Westman, “when a highlighter is infused with colour, like in blighlighters, then you have an amazing lifting effect on your skin.”

As for the beauty tools needed to apply a blighlighter, it all depends on the texture. If you choose a powder blighlighter, a fluffy brush can do. On the other hand, if you prefer creams or balms that provide extra hydration and anti-ageing benefits, use a blending tool like a brush or sponge or even your fingertips to achieve a natural finish.

So, whenever you have a Zoom-meeting or want a French-style look, turn to a blightlighter for glowing skin.

HOW TO FIND THE BEST BLIGHLIGHTER
FOR YOUR SKIN TONE

  • Fair complexions

If your skin tone is very fair to light, opt for soft pink or peachy shades in blighlighters. Avoid any pink shades with warm undertones as they may amplify any redness on your face.

  • Medium & Olive complexions

If you have medium or olive skin tone, prefer cool pink tones or even bronzed shades to achieve warmness on your face.

  • Dark complexions

If you have dark skin, you should prefer rose gold shades.
