“I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans,” Yves Saint Laurent told New York Magazine in November 1983. “The most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.”

We can’t think of another fabric that’s as universally worn and adored as denim. First invented in the 1800s by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss, the iconic denim jean was created for miners and soon became a trademark of American cowboys and the Wild West. It gained popularity in the ’60s when Hollywood legends, counterculture rebels, rock stars, and high fashion alike adopted and cemented its style as cool.
Denim jeans meant to mark the culture of the last 150 years, probably more than we can imagine. They are now a versatile garment that compliments every decent wardrobe. As it ages, it changes and fades; it reflects our lives, and that’s why it’s unique.

With such broad appeal, it’s no wonder that denim is at the forefront of the Spring 2021 fashion scene, with sustainability leading the trend. The possibilities of denim are boundless, but this era gives the fabric an added environmental edge.
