WORLD OF SCENTS

The sense of smell is the one most closely related to the function of memory. Past images, sentiments, people, events of our lives, each one has its own olfactory partner.
As author Victoria Erickson wisely puts it: “Scent is our greatest, most potent form of time travel, like an arrow. It tears through layers. It finds the center.”

Dimitra Lazaratou, the owner of Dialogue Public Relations, guides us through her private word of scents and memories.

My first scent memory is: Mommy. The most familiar, beloved smell of all. The very first love, the love of my life. The hug I seek, a circle of trust, my safe place.

Happiness smells like: Lilac, orange blossoms and primrose. You know that spring has sprung when you go out for a night run and these mesmerizing scents fill the air around the neighborhood, stimulating the endorphin in your entire body.

Friendship smells like: Jasmine. Discreet, pure, precious; somewhat delicate, to be treated with tenderness.

Regret smells like: Cinnamon. Intense and bittersweet.

Success smells like: The adrenalin of New York. A stroll in the city of all cities, among golden boys and golden girls, indulging in the scents of the major avenues and Central Park: deluxe boutiques, oaks, fresh flowers, hot chocolate and… hot dogs!

Heartbreak or loss smells like: Rain, washing down sadness. The scent of wet soil, a true catharsis for the soul.

Love smells like: Vanilla. Sweet, sensational, warm and seductive, just like the colours of the sky minutes before the sunset.

The first thing I smell in the morning is: My husband’s nuk. These precious moments of snuggling before we get up for work.

The last thing I smell before I go to bed is: My velvety hand cream. An olfactory lullaby for sweet dreams.

A scent or smell that I love that others usually don’t: Dogs. A man’s best friend and the purest cuddle. There is something particular about their smell that I can’t describe.

My home smells like: English Pear and Freesia (guess which brand!). Pleasant, familiar and inviting. Good vibes only.

My ideal vacation smells like: Coconut. Tropical, laid back, sexy. Longing for a sun kiss. Alternatively, the scent of pine trees, reminiscent of the endless Mediterranean summers.

I smell like: Gardenia. While I choose a different perfume every day, heads literally turn whenever I wear Cartier “La Panthère”. Definitely a sucker for the noble white flowers.

The worst smell is: Fear. OK, and the smell of stinky clothes or bad breath! I could jump off the window!

How I apply fragrance: I surround myself in a cloud; one spray behind each earlobe, one on each wrist, one on the inner side of each elbow, and a final touch on the backbone and décolleté.
